How to Connect External Monitor to iPhone/iPad

You have noticed by now that many people are sharing YouTube videos. There is a chance you watch a lot of those videos on your iPhone, iPad, computer, or TV. Maybe your kids, grandkids, or friends are YouTubers. They have their own YouTube channel. You decided, now it’s your time as well. And why not? Let’s do this.

All you need is your smartphone to record a video. To have a better quality you may add a microphone, and mount your smartphone on a tripod. And you are good to go!

But sometimes you need an external monitor to be able to see better what is in the frame of your video that you are working on. That’s why you need an adapter to connect your smartphone with the external monitor.

You will need:

  • Monitor (HDMI or VGA)
  • Adapter (HDMI or VGA, with Type C or Lightning connection)
  • HDMI cable or VGA cable
  • Power Bank (to recharge your iPhone/iPad during the work)

How to set it all up:

  1. If you already have a monitor check if it has HDMI or VGA input
  2. Based on the monitor input you need HDMI or VGA adapter. But you need to also check your iPhone/iPad or iPad Pro connection to be able to select the right adapter:
    • iPhone/iPad – that’s the lightning connection to HDMI (or VGA) adapter
    • iPad Pro – that’s a USB-C connection to HDMI (or VGA) adapter

When you connect the external monitor via an adapter to your iPhone/iPad or iPad Pro, then you should see an icon at the top of your iPhone/iPad or iPad Pro that will indicate that your iPhone/iPad is connected.
